About us

We’re making big changes at Transport for London (TfL). Our finance function is evolving to ensure a sharp focus on TfL’s core business priorities. We’re doing this by building a new division that acts as the ‘commercial brain’ to the business integrating finance, procurement and supply chain to provide stronger strategic and commercial excellence across our business.

TfL plays a key role in shaping what life is like in London. Our transport infrastructure and public transport network is admired around the world. We are literally changing London for the future – making it one of the best cities to live, work and visit.

Over 31 million journeys are made across our transport network every day and we do all that we can to keep our city moving, growing and working. To meet the needs of our customers, now and for the future, we’re providing the modern and affordable transport network London needs. We are also the third largest landowner in London, are responsible for Europe’s largest infrastructure project, and own 20% of all outdoor advertising space in the UK!

To support this, our multi-billion pound programme to make our services more reliable, frequent and accessible includes introducing new trains, rebuilding some of the busiest stations, and investing in congestion and air quality initiatives on our roads through our healthy streets approach.

About the role

There are a number of exciting opportunities across all of our modes of transport, including London Underground, Buses, Streets and Rail, plus a number of key roles supporting other operations and our professional services team. You will be expected to be fully embedded in the business and be a trusted and influential member of the team. We expect our Senior Finance Business Partners to shape strategic and operational decision making by providing insight, challenge and advice.

There are a variety of operational and project roles, however all will have significant budgets and require you to work collaboratively and cross-functionally. You will be expected to manage multiple conflicting agendas and ensure that you employ robust, timely and accurate financial information to drive decision making.

Reporting into a Head of Finance, you will be responsible for leading the provision of a customer focussed financial service and finance business partnering team ensuring business needs are met, alongside ensuring that decisions are effectively planned and executed and any risk is minimised. Your key stakeholders will be Operational and Project Directors and you will participate in the decision making process at operational and portfolio programme boards.

This is a senior level management role and is central in ensuring that TfL can deliver the Mayor’s manifesto commitment to increase value for money and improve commercial capability for the future.

About you

You’ll likely be an experienced commercially savvy Finance Leader, already operating at a senior level within a large £multi-million complex operational organisation. You’re driven to add value to the business and improve business efficiency. You’ll ideally be a qualified Accountant (ICAEW, ACCA OR CIMA) with extensive experience driving multi-billion pound divisional finances for safety and mission critical operations.

You’ll have experience of delivering consolidated financial and business operational performance reports to divisions to drive financial performance, reduce costs and drive income. Ideally, you’ll have experience of providing the financial stewardship on large-scale commercial contracts and/or experience of labour cost management across a large operating business. You’ll also have the gravitas to influence a variety of stakeholders right up to board level and have a solid understanding of project management, PMO and procurement and supply chain processes and practices.

Alongside an extremely strong and progressive finance background, ideally within commercially driven organisations, you’ll also continuously be championing and leading by example showing exceptionally strong behaviours. As we are transforming it is crucial for our new finance colleagues to display positive behaviours for current stakeholders to collaborate with, and to constantly look to raise the bar internally.

We are looking for an established finance leader who can inspire diverse teams and drive excellence across the CFO function. You’ll also be a strategic and expert business partner where market insight, finance leadership, assurance to senior business stakeholders and risk management lies at the core of your strategy.

Efficiency, productivity, innovation and customer service lie at the heart of what we do. We are excited about the journey we’re on and we are looking for leaders who believe in our journey too.

Application Process

Please apply using your CV (maximum three pages) and a covering letter (maximum one page) detailing why you’re the right leader for this critical role.

Please think carefully about the skills, knowledge and experience outlined in the job advert and ensure your CV and cover letter reflects the requirements of the role you are applying for. Short listing will be carried out on the basis of answers to any pre-screening questions and the information on your CV and covering letter.

Equality and Diversity

We are an equal opportunity employer and we aspire to be as diverse as the City we serve. We encourage applications from all sections of the community regardless of gender, faith, ethnicity, sexuality or disability status.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 9th February at 23.59hrs.

Benefits

Competitive basic salary plus you will enjoy excellent benefits and scope to grow. Rewards vary according to the business area and role, but may include:
